Kid-centric Flaw

What makes us separate animated movies as classics and un-classics? Those movies that we prefer to call as classics have something in common; they make us watch it over and over again and it's still fun. Un-classics, on the other hand have this 'kid-centric flaw'. This flaw is made by filmmakers who make movies just to please kids and hope the jokes work.

Let's have a look at two DreamWorks films; Shrek and Mr. Peabody & Sherman. Without doubt you are more familiar with the name like 'Shrek' than 'Peabody'. The ya re both creative and well made films, however, one is famous beyond compare while the other has never been people's favorite choice for a movie-night.

Let me tell you why. Mr. Peabody & Sherman  tries to please kids with overacted facial expression and 'puns' that had never really worked to the grown-ups. On the contrary, Shrek showed great care and attention to both to the kids and the grown-ups. If Peabody's expressions was exaggerated, Shrek's was real-like expressions based on how the character feels.

In conclusion, I personally, want to see movies that last for ages. Not just movies for kids but one that could be still be enjoyed to the general audiences. Some movies tend to seem mad in a rush of time. It's pleasing if a kid enjoys the film but if the movie has this 'kid-centricness' into it it can no longer be taken seriously.

Review #31 | Mr. Peabody & Sherman

I have been waiting for this movie ever since the first teaser trailer came out. Due to the circumstances I had to wait longer that I could take, but am I glad I watched it finally!

Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman, use their time machine - the WABAC - to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes the WABAC out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidentally rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. Together, the time traveling trio will make their mark on history.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman is a stylized animation that breaks new ground in the animation world. DreamWorks Animation is famous for its absurd but creative stories and it feels like past mistakes/failures led them to great story telling and although the company is having a hard time making money after the Shrek franchise, Mr. Peabody & Sherman is definitely an improvement in quality.

For the most part the animation was beautiful; the background animation of buildings and historical places are beautiful. Characters are stylized and simple. My favorite characters were definitely Sherman and Penny. Alas, Mr. Peabody and other side characters had little appeal in a design point of view but most characters were funny and amusing just to look at.

Although the settings of the story were crazy as in a dog being a parent and travelling through time, it was good. I loved how the movie turned out to be. The movie was fast paced going from one place to another like crazy but at the end of the movie it had its moments. Yes, the part when Sherman said that he wanted to be a dog if it meant being as a caring dad as Mr. Peabody.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman is fast pace fun movie that leads to a good conclusion. I also took the movie a little personally and decided to be a dog if it meant being a good hearted genius.

After unexpected first week of box office performance, Mr. Peabody & Sherman manages to rise 1st Place in the box office 2nd week.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman  grosses $21.1 million (estimated) in its second week. To date, Mr. Peabody & Sherman earned $63.2 million.

A Good Start

The upcoming animated movies are getting some early positive review on Rotten Tomatoes. The Lego Movie directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller duo currently has 1 fresh review on Rotten Tomatoes. Peter Debruge from Variety says:

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller irreverently deconstruct the state of the modern blockbuster and deliver a smarter, more satisfying experience in its place, emerging with a fresh franchise for others to build upon.

My most anticipated movie of 2014, Mr. Peabody & Sherman currently has 2 fresh reviews from Rotten Tomatoes. Mark Adams from Screen International says:

An action-packed animated romp that will attract - and maybe even educate - a young audience, and might even strike a chord with reluctant older adults who recall the original cartoons from the 1960s.

And Andy Lea from Daily Star says:

Witty, beautifully animated and surprisingly educational, DreamWorks' time-travelling adventure should impress kids and parents in equal measure.

So...anyone excited for the upcoming movies?

A New Trailer for 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman'

Along with the new awesome poster, 'DreamWorks' has released a new trailer for 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman'. The teaser trailer for Mr. Peabody was released on YouTube October 25th. The new trailer doesn't reveal much, which is good and offers more humor.

DreamWorks Animation has release a beautiful calendar based on the time travelling adventure film 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman'. You can download it here.

'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' must be one of the best in visual from DreamWorks Animation. The animation shown from the stills from the movie is groundbreaking and creative. It feels like a cartoon well polished and very, very clean & simple.

As for the story, will shall have to wait and see.
